To correct the narrator I would have to say that both Siam and Japan willingly imported western architecture and infrastructure and governmental institutions as fast as possible to catch up to the west. The narrator tried her best but had minor flaws.

Muaythai4ko if read what I wrote, you’d note that I was trying to correct the narrator, YES BOTH SIAM AND JAPAN modernized along western lines quickly but not to prevent colonization. G.Britan/France wanted Siam to be a buffer between them, Japan did not need to be colonized because the Western powers already exploited China. However in the 1890s Siam suffered territory loss to France.

Around 100,000 Asian labourers and 16,000 allied POWs died during it’s construction many from overwork, malnutrition, and diseases like cholera, malaria, and dysentery.

Unfortunately the bridge built over the river kwai and the line all the way to Burma was constructed by P.O.W.s from Australia, America and Europe. Many thousands were killed by the Japanese during this construction.Thus I find how the people of Thailand show the ultimate disrespect to our fallen heros by disco and karoake boats floating past the cemeteries.

Maybe, you have misunderstood about Thai history. We have a western building it’s because The Thailand King has sent many princes for studying in Europe for a long time BEFORE colonial time. when they came back they built many palaces which is a western style. As you can see ,some architecture are the combination between Thai and Western. Please keep in your mind that we ARE NEVER BELONG TO ANY WESTERN COUNTRY !!!
