Phuket nightlife takes on many different forms. Phuket is one of Thailand’s top destinations and as such there is a diverse range of nightspots on the island. Although Phuket nightlife is not quite on the same level as in Bangkok, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to find somewhere to have fun.

Phuket nightlife is at its most lively in Patong. You’ll either love Patong or you’ll hate it. The bars are loud, the clubs are obnoxious and the streets are crowded. That being said, Patong is cheap and the bars and clubs stay open later than in other parts of Phuket.

Patong is famous for its nightlife. The center of the action is found on Soi Bangla, which is a hive of go-go bars, discos and stage shows. This is Phuket nightlife at its most seedy, but it can be a lot of fun if you go in the right frame of mind.

Generally speaking, the bars and clubs in Patong churn out hip hop and dance music hits. It can all be a bit predictable, so don’t go expecting anything special.

Patong is also known for its girls. Yes, it’s true, there are countless bar girls and sex shows in Patong, but the people of Patong make no effort to conceal these facts. Patong is what it is and it’s best not to take the whole place too seriously.

Perhaps the most fun that can be had in Phuket is at some of the local clubs. Phuket nightlife is at its most authentic in the small Thai clubs, where you can check out some of the local bands. Phuket Town is probably the best place to sample some Thai-style clubbing.

Also in Phuket Town there are lots of pubs and beer bars and much less of the seedy side of Phuket nightlife.

There are plenty of other areas where you can go and party, but usually they aren’t as busy and entertaining as in Patong or Phuket Town. There are a few exceptions scattered around the island in places such as Surin, Kata-Karon and Nai Harn.

The only area that Phuket really lacks anything in terms of nightlife is serious clubbing. There are a few Phuket clubs where you can hear cutting-edge music, but these are few and far between. However, it is possible to catch electro, techno, breaks, house and more in some Phuket clubs and bars.

Phuket could be a major clubbing destination in Southeast Asia, but the island has a long way to go before it can start competing with the likes of Singapore and KL.

For now, Phuket nightlife has enough depth to keep people entertained, but you feel as if there is more to come. The shining beacon of Phuket nightlife is that there is a great live-music scene around the island. There are lots of bands who can rattle out everything from rock and indie to jazz and blues. If you can get into it, there is a top indie scene in Phuket. Pick up some CDs in a local store to get a feel for the music.

Phuket Town

Thought it has plentiful hotels and restaurants, Phuket Town stands distinct from the tailor-made tourist settlements along the beaches as a place geared primarily towards its residents. Most visitors hang about just long enough to jump on a beach-bound songthaew (local minibus), but you may find yourself returning for a welcome dose of real life; Phuket town has an enjoyably authentic market and some of the best handicraft shops on the island. If you’re on a tight budget, the town is worth considering as a base, as accommodation and food come a little less expensive, and you can get out to all the beaches with relative ease. Bear in mind, though, that the town offers little in the way of nightlife, and as public transport to and form the more lively beaches stops at dusk, you’ll have to either rent your own wheels or spend a lot of money on tuk-tuks.

Aside from a manically bustling market on Thanon Ranong there’s not a great deal to see, though a two-hour wander around the streets will take you past several faded colonial-style residences built by Chinese merchants at the turn of the century. Recognizable by their doors and shutters painted in pastel pinks, blues and greens, a string of these elegant old mansions lines Thanon Talang: the carved lintels and brightly painted shutters of the building next door to the Chinese temple are definitely worth an upward glance. You’ll find relics of other historical buildings on Thanon Yaowarat, and on Thanon Ranong, Thanon Phang Nga and Thanon Damrong.

Kids usually enjoy the Phuket Butterfly Farm and Aquarium, located a couple of kilometers beyond the northern end of Thanon Yaowarat at 71/6 Soi Paneang in Ban Sam Kong, but though there are heaps of butterflies of various species, and a few reef fish, there’s a lack of specific information. There’s no public transport to the butterfly farm, but a tuk-tuk from the town center is available. If you have your own vehicle, follow Thanon Yaowarat as far north as you can and then pick up the signs for the farm.

Patong beach locates 15 kilometers away from Phuket Town, resides between Karon and Kalim beaches. Patong is the party capital of Phuket mostly made up with hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, banks and accommodations. Aside from nightclubs, the major highlight of this coast is shopping. Patong also offers cosmopolitan of eating Array, including Arabic, French, German, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Scandinavian and pretty much any countries that send tourists here. However, the prices can be inflated so it is recommended to seek aids from local to bargain price or ask your way around.

 

There are ways to get around in Patong, however the place is also covered on foot. The minivan (songthaew which is bright red minibus style) charges as much as 20 baht from downtown to Patong and vice versa. The trip should take around 45 minutes. Tuk-Tuk or the three-wheeled minivans have no meters on them so the price should be agreed beforehand and do not forget to bargain hard. A short hop shouldn’t take more than 100 baht per trip.

 

There are lots of things to do during you stay. At daylight, business is opened for jet-skiing, parasailing, scuba diving and many other watersports. It is also nice to pay to see the world famous ladyboy show at cabaret show or see for free at Bang La road. For boxing fans, you can take Muay Thai kickboxing for 2 hours at 300 baht. After practicing you may want to check out the real boxing at Bangla Stadium. There are even Thai language schools around to for those who are curious pick up few words. At night, Bang La road is flooded with mixtures of pubs, beer bars, disco clubs, and go-go bars. The place can be jammed with human traffic but it is also nice to sit back and relax with good music. Although there is a heavy nightlife at Thanon Bang La, the place is still suitable for spending with your family since Bang La is just a small portion within Patong and is in fact easy to avoid.

Booking Cheap Phuket Hotels

Although Phuket may be an island paradise, that doesnt mean that the hotels on the island have to be expensive. Sure, there are luxury hotels and resorts, but there are a large number of cheap Phuket hotels perfect for everyone from backpackers and solo travelers to families and couples.There are several of these guesthouses on Ranong Road and Phang-nga Road in Phuket Town. There are also a few of them in Patong and other areas. These guesthouses come with minimal frills, but they are generally clean and perfectly pleasant if youre looking to save a little money. These places, however, arent usually available to book through the major online booking agents.Patong is an interesting place. There are lots of hotels in Patong. If you want an active nightlife scene, stay in Patong. The beach isnt especially pleasant, but there are lots of bars, clubs and restaurants. Kata and Karon are similar, but a lot more toned down. The beaches are also better.At the upper end of the spectrum are the Phuket resorts and hotels in places such as Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Cape Panwa. These accommodations could never be considered cheap Phuket hotels, but if you are keen to stay somewhere special, resorts such as Indigo Pearl and Sri Panwa are the way to go.
